Geographic location
The shipping container leasing market is heavily influenced by location. The location of containers is a major factor in the fluctuating nature of leasing rates. Rates are typically lower in easily accessible locations. However, they can vary greatly in inland or landlocked areas.
China is frequently regarded as the global trade epicenter. This means it is also in charge of reshaping the global economy following a crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic. The impact of China on the global supply chain and trade interconnectedness is significant. Notably, China has only recently emerged (and is on par with the United States).
However, there are now numerous potential locations emerging as fast-growing trade markets.
In 2023, APAC is expected to contribute 47% of leasing market growth. During 2023, China, India, Australia, Malaysia, Japan, and Singapore are expected to see an increase in port activity, a rise in the volume of containerized goods, and development in the manufacturing industry. This increase in containerized goods volume in these countries is accelerating the growth of the leasing market in these locations, facilitating growth in APAC regions.
Market segment
When it comes to market segment growth, the dry containers segment will see an increase this year. The reefer segment came in second, with the tank segment coming in third. Investing in reefers, dry containers, and tanks to rent out to customers when they are needed can significantly increase your profit margins.
Prices
Over the last year, the Container xChange platform noticed that one-way pick-up charges for containers were decreasing in China. These rates were seen to have dropped significantly.
These fees peaked in September 2021 at around US $2730, before falling to around US $804 in December 2022. This is a 70% reduction. This decline is more pronounced on the China-US route. Pickup fees from China to the EU have also been declining and may continue to do so in 2023.
